The Carnivorous Plant FAQ Field Trip Report -

North and South Carolina low country, 2007

Return to the Trip Overview

Orchid:
A nice Calopogon tuberosus for your pleasure, growing among the wiregrasses.

When exploring tick or leech infested areas, I usually tuck my pants into my socks. Jim takes this one step further and seals his pants to his socks with big lengths of duct tape. Very fashionable! I can understand the interest in avoiding Lyme disease, but I got the impression that Jim's dislike of ticks went way past that, nearly to the extent that I viscerally dread leeches. I also learned that Jim was not particularly fond of snakes either.

Being uncomfortable with ticks and snakes doesn't seem to be exactly preadapted traits for a person doing research on plants in South Carolina flatwood swamps, but Jim seems to do quite well anyway!
