The Carnivorous Plant FAQ Field Trip Report -

Floating Sarracenia!
A surprisingly short distance downstream, the water flow was blocked by a mesh of shrubs and branches. Floating among the rafts of dead branches (and, sadly, trash) was this astonishing colony of pitcher plants.

Let me be very clear. These were not rooted in the ground---they were free-floating in the muck, in water so deep I could not sound bottom with my kayak paddle.

I had to shoot these images by setting the tripod in my kayak and holding my breath. Randy and Beth kindly assisted by quieting their kayaks, so wave motion was a minimum.

Here is another view of these plants.
