The Carnivorous Plant FAQ Field Trip Report -

Splinter Hill Bog, Alabama, 2010

Return to the Trip Overview

Sarracenia rosea
Look at the interesting color variation between these two plants!

Is this species the culprit responsible for the hybrid backcrossing? This area of Splinter Hill certainly had lots of both Sarracenia rosea and Sarracenia psittacina present.

But if this species is the source of backcrossing, isn't it remarkable that the hybrids are so tall, and not at all squat?

Or are we fooling ourselves into thinking that this area had an enhanced number of decumbent pitchers---were they everywhere, but just hidden in the grasses?
